Phil knew that not all kids had been as lucky as he was. His parents had been supportive of him, encouraged him, were so proud that their son was so talented.
He knew they wouldn't be so proud to see him now. He'd done a lot of things they wouldn't be proud of. Heavy drinking, speed, cocaine, violent sex, violent gay sex...
After Rick Allen lost his arm, Phil noticed Steve was drinking more. A lot more. The night Steve nearly died Phil was at his side - or as close as he could get - and thinking how he could end it if his beloved didn't make it through.
When he did make it through Phil was overjoyed and promised to support Steve in getting clean. They checked into rehab together but both checked out three weeks later. Steve walked first and Phil couldn't see the point in carrying on without him.
He supported Steve when he started cutting down on the drinking, followed his example by only drinking the same as him during the "Hysteria" tour. Unfortunately he did other things in the same quantities as Steve.
He hadn't even been a coke fiend. Speed had always been his poison and he couldn't get the same rush off cocaine, so he started mixing them together and snorting them.
They hoovered up the drugs. By the end of the tour they'd snorted thousands of pounds worth of cocaine between them and were both drinking heavily again. There were nights, even some mornings after that tour that were total blanks to them.
This time, Phil wasn't so lucky and ended up in hospital with Steve. He was sceptical about Steve's promise to go to rehab again, but he kept his promise and checked into Gale with him. Maybe they'd actually stick with it this time.
